In discussing the possibilities of how to approach setting up a residency with MFA Fine Art course leader Edwina Fitzpatrick along with associate lecturers Anne-Marie Creamer and Ian Monroe, I mentioned that I had attended a talk hosted by Art Map London where guest speaker Paul Bailey, Director of the trust, had talked about his role at The Florence Trust. In amongst this and a whole host of other enlightening information Paul had said that if the opportunity arises set up your own residency. Anne-Marie suggested that I follow this up by contacting The Florence Trust to see what, if anything, else I could extract from their wealth of experience. Following an email dialogue with Neil Jeffries explaining my intentions and the opportunity I was invited to meet Neil at the Trust. Antony Dixon accompanied me as he had volunteered to help in any way possible to set the residency up and had been to the same talk.
After a tour and an overview of the Trust with Neil we had time to ask questions and he gave a whole host of sound advice based on my wish of how to give the residency some structure so that ultimately all potential participants would benefit. In amongst the gems given was the suggestion to organise regular crits.
In reflection this was a really informative and valuable experience. It taught me that most people are willing to be generous and give sound advice when asked the right questions. Fortunately I had a whole host of questions prepared so that between us we took away a really exciting but informed way forward.
