Assessment Group Show 7th March 2016
MFA Studio, Wimbledon
For the assessment I had decided that I would only be submitting some of the works in the following slideshow gallery. Although I had taken two other paintings along I knew that these were not as strong, I felt that most of the other paintings are still feeling unresolved and some incomplete. Slides 12, 13 and 14 I feel still need refining, I was pleased to have this confirmation. I also thought that far fewer would be hung.
I believe that these paintings are more reflective of the fleeting nature of the social observation I encounter. They are passing, momentary snapshots. All the paintings are rendered on free papers aimed at commuters. They are papers I read on my commute, they are now like a sketchbook of the people I encounter on my commute. These are transient images on a disposable, recyclable, ephemeral commodity. The unity of the work seems more present when hung, as the Corridor Show. The line reflects the endless lines of commuters sitting on trains or walking along the route I travel, the endless stream of people I pass. I felt that they needed to be hung close together to reflect the claustrophobic conditions of commuting.
Reflections: I was not expecting to hang as many works as I did. So when it was clear I could hang eleven pieces it was a surprise to me. I am very happy that they were hung in a line. However, it felt very déjà vu with the works being back in the corridor space again. It would have been interesting to see how they may have created a dialogue with other MFA artists. In some ways being outside the studio space felt like being segregated but in many ways it made sense since the commuters are external too. It is refreshing to have the papers flapping in the natural breeze caused by the very nature of the corridor space. It gives the newspapers an extra life.
The group's work within the allocated space worked really well too. My one reservation was the very long far wall that looked so sparse. I was surprised how many floor & sculptural pieces there were.
